THE TAVISTOCK 'REAL' CHEESE FAIR

The Tavistock Real Cheese Fair at the end of August was quite frankly and cheesetasticly fantastic! All the cheese lovers who attended, where rocked to their socks with tables of fabulous artisan cheese,   the cheese makers did a brilliant job painting a picture of what goes into their artisan cheese, both in the ingredients and the science behind the cheese, also the animal husbandry, which is key to getting top class milk .

I would like to say a BIG thank you to Ken and Ruth who are dear friends and run the fabulous Combe House Hotel, Devon, for such enthusiastic help with our cheese fair. You are Special! www.combehousedevon.com    If you have not been here, go it is wonderful

A couple of comments that make the world of real cheese  such awonderful place to be. Good cheese seems to attract lovely people, from far and wide!

Richard from Poole said,

"We have come all the way from Poole, just for the cheese fair, it is brilliant" !

"Brian and I have booked into a B&B Saturday night to be able to come to the fair and really looking forward to it, especially to see the wedding cheese cakes. "

Jane and Brian, Berkshire.

Alright the cheese fair has happened this year, but it is still worth reading about, to get ready for the next one!

So lucky are we to live in such a beautiful part of the country and all that it offers, may we invite you to our fab cheese fair? We organise this event annually at the end of August on the bank holiday weekend.

This Fair gives you the opportunity to meet over twenty five of the country's coolest, wickedest and awesome-est artisan cheesemakers and taste their cheeses.  With live music, wines and cider to accompany the cheese our unique fair is widely acclaimed and opens the door to an artisan cheese heaven. An event you do not want to miss! Relaxed, informative and generally, a cheesetastic day out. What Woodstock was to real music, Tavi-stock is to real cheese! See you there.

Just thought I would pop this picture (left) in, fabulous does it not look? Heavenly is the taste. It is some of Jay the chef's (Hillside Speciallity Foods) completely ravishing, and -made for cheese -pickle. Also his fruit cheese paste, both are knock out with our superb artisan cheeses. Some while ago while working at a fine hotel we supply with cheese I asked Jazza if he could do something like Membrillo but with our in season fruits to accompany our cheese.hey presto the results are mouth watering Now he runs his own business with his brother  Will,  what bangers are to mash, Hillside is to cheese.

Entry is, as always, FREE and we are hoping to see as many of you cheese lovers as possible.

If the weather is bright take a drive over Dartmoor - with it's spectacular scenery - if it is not so bright still drive over the moors as it then is beautiful in it's moodiness- then follow it up with spectacular CHEESE in Tavistock. Yep, I am liking that thought very much.

Graham is talking Cheese at the Fair in 2010 (above). He is but one of the wonderful cheesemakers you will have the chance to meet this August bank holiday weekend. Don't miss out on such a fantastic opportunity - we are fun and cheese at the 'Real' Cheese Fair!

The amazing cheddar makers from Newton St. Cyres, Quicke's, will also be in the crowd... what more could anyone ask from a day out, than sampling a wonderful creamy, hand-made cheddar and talking to the maker himself about it?!

Check out their new Sheep cheese, ewe will go baaa-rmy over it! Sorry could not help myself..... I must be spending too much time alone talking to our cheeses (they like that joke) .

And, of course, you will have the chance to buy any of the fantastic cheesy creations you get to sample in the Tavistock Country Cheeses shop...just a few seconds from the show room in the Tavistock Town Hall. The Country Cheeses team will be there on both Saturday and Sunday so you can go home with some totally beautiful cheese and savour the flavour that is 'real cheese'. We look forward to seeing you all.

Talk to Richard Calver of Westcombe Dairy (left) and James Keen (right) of Keens Cheddar, their family history is entwined with un-pasteurised cheddar,  this is the real thing,

once tasted and you realise Cheddar, real cheddar that is, is just such a sublime sensery experience and must be preserved.

Sue Proudfoot strives to make perfect cheese.

She started from scratch and now makes that 'perfect cheese' in fact several of them!

These are tasters of the fair, come on down and get fully cheesed up. You will go away having learned lots about our rich heritage in cheese making and tasted the no less rich flavour of the best of the best.
