Cheesy Wedding Cakes
The phenomenon that is... CHEESY WEDDING CAKES
As times change it has become apparent to us that couples are feeling less compelled towards the 'traditional' wedding. People are picking and choosing the traditional elements they want to retain but adding more personal, contemporary twists. One of these choices is whether the wedding cake needs to be a sweet cake - why not go for something savoury if you do not have a sweet tooth? Therefore it has become more common for people to approach us about bespoke cheese wedding cakes. Some of the questions most frequently asked are:
In this cake, Gary used:
(from the base upwards)
- Quicke's Traditional Cheddar
Full flavoured, a good sized base - Cornish Yarg
Gentle in flavour, pretty and colourful - Corn Marigold Organic
Creamy and Golden - Partridge Blue
Tangy with a full blue flavour, great contrast! - Dorstone Ash Goats' milk adds variety, and the ash coating adds the 'wow' factor
How big is a cheese wedding cake?
Well, as big as you want! You tell us how many people the cake is for, and we'll tell you how big the cake needs to be. We buy whole cheeses and so we can cut these to any shape and size you want.
How much would a cheese wedding cake cost?
It depends on how many people the cake is for, because this affects how big the cake is. You also have to choose which cheeses the cake is made from, as this can also affect the cost. Some cheeses are more expensive than others. As a rough guide, a cake for 100 people made with cheeses that we would recommend in terms of a variety of colours, textures and milks would come out at approximately £120 - £150.
What cheeses are used in my wedding cake?
You can choose whichever cheeses you like. Remember though that we know a lot about cheese and are here to help and advise you should you require it. You need to think about the variety in your selection, the texture, colour, strength of flavour and milk used.
You should have at least one hard cheese, one soft and a blue, and hopefully a goats’ or ewes’ milk cheese
amongst these.
In this cake, Gary used:
- Montgomery Mature Cheddar
Full, crumbly texture and good sized base - Cornish Yarg
Gentle, creamy, pretty and colourful - Beenleigh Blue
Sheeps' milk adds variety, sweet to taste - White Nancy
Crumbly but gooey goats' cheese - Little Stinky
Smelly, semi-soft and orange in colour - Devon Button
Ripening baby goats' cheese

Will it look attractive?
Your cake WILL look attractive! We can help you in this respect by recommending cheeses with colour and cutting them to the right shape so you get a graduated pyramid shape to the cake. You should also decorate your cake. It will be in tiers like a sweet cake and this provides an ideal base for fruit. We find that redcurrants, lychee, grapes and cape gooseberries are ideal.
